Regional Syntheses

 NATIONAL SYNTHESIS

REGION I  I (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT)

In the absence at the submission time of diocesan syntheses from the Archdiocese of 
Boston and the Diocese of Manchester, these findings represent a broad synthesis of the input 
received from the (Arch)Dioceses of Hartford, Bridgeport, Burlington, Fall River, Norwich, 
Portland, Providence, Springfield, and Worcester.

REGION II II (NY)

Region II includes all eight New York dioceses, organized geographically under the spiritual leadership of a diocesan bishop.

REGION III  III (NJ, PA)

REGION IV IV (DC, DE, MD, VA, VI, WV)

REGION V V (AL, KY, LA, MS, TN)

Region V includes the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee in which 
there are 3 Archdioceses and 15 Dioceses. 

REGION VI VI (OH, MI)

Region VI has population and geographic diversity, with large urban Dioceses in Detroit, 
Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo. Mid-sized Dioceses include Columbus, Lansing, Grand 
Rapids, and Youngstown. Dioceses that cover a large geographic area, with fewer numbers of 
Catholics, include Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Marquette, Gaylord, and Steubenville. The Catholic 
population within Region VI is 3,524,730.

REGION 7 VII (IL, IN, WI)


REGION 8  VIII (MN, ND, SD)

Region VIII consists of ten dioceses across three states: the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and 
Minneapolis and the Dioceses of Crookston, Duluth, New Ulm, Saint Cloud and WinonaRochester in Minnesota; the Dioceses of Bismarck and Fargo in North Dakota; and the Dioceses 
of Rapid City and Sioux Falls in South Dakota

REGION 9 IX (IA, KS, MO, NE)

Region IX comprises the 15 dioceses in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. These 
states along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers lie at the center of the continental United States.

REGION 10  X (AR, OK, TX)

(1) The (arch)dioceses in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint  Peter comprise the Episcopal Region X of the Catholic Church in the United States of America.

REGION 12 XII (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA)

Dioceses of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana

REGION 13  XIII (AZ, CO, NM, UT, WY)

Region XIII consists of the Archdioceses of Denver and Santa Fe, and the Dioceses of Cheyenne, Colorado Springs, Gallup, Las Cruces, Phoenix, Pueblo, Salt Lake City, and Tucson. V

REGION 14  XIV (FL, GA, NC, SC)

Region XIV encompasses four states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Of 
the twelve Arch/Dioceses included, the following submitted reports which contributed to this 
summary: the Archdioceses of Atlanta and Miami; the Dioceses of Charleston, Charlotte, Orlando, 
Palm Beach, Raleigh, Saint Augustine, Saint Petersburg, Savannah and Venice

REGION 15 XV (Eastern Rites)


To accommodate the depth and breadth of Catholics engaged in ministry work outside of the 
traditional diocesan structure in the United States, “Region XVI” was created by the U.S. Synod 
Team to solicit the contributions of Catholic organizations and groups. Individual contributions 
submitted via a survey on the USCCB Synod Website were also included in “Region XVI.”
